Overland blazes past Smoky Hill in Wagon Wheel rivalry game

The Trailblazers shut out the Buffaloes for their first win in the crosstown rivalry series since 2017.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — The Wagon Wheel rivalry was on full display at Stutler Bowl Stadium this past Thursday night.

Smoky Hill has owned the Wagon Wheel for the past six seasons as the Trailblazers hadn't won in the crosstown rivalry since 2017.

But they routed the Buffaloes 40-0 to kick off the 2024 season.

The game began competitive.

Smoky Hill's defense came up huge twice, first causing Jarrius Ward to fumble on the first drive. And second intercepting Junior QB Matthew Jimenez-Solis during the Trailblazers second drive. Ensuing a 0-0 score at the end of the first quarter.

But Overland would be the first to strike gold in the end zone.

Freshman quarterback Angel Chavez found Dejay Davenport on a deep 50-yard pass for a touchdown at the beginning of the second quarter. The Trailblazers would never look back.

Overland would add on another offensive touchdown along with a defensive touchdown making it 21-0 at halftime.

Set to receive in the second half was Overland, Smoky Hill tried to surprise the special teams with an onside kick, but the Trailblazer Sophomore Zyaire Custis had other plans, returning the ball all the way for a touchdown.

The Trailblazers would add on two more scores from senior running back Jarrius Ward delivering a 40 plus yard and a 20 yard rushing TD's locking up the win against the Buffaloes.

Looking ahead to the next opponents, Overland (1-0) goes on the road to face Vista PEAK Prep (0-1). And for Smoky Hill (0-1) they will look to get into the win column at home against Douglas County (1-0).
