PUEBLO, Colo. — At long last, the Mancos Bluejays are state champions.
Mancos entered the 8-man football postseason bracket as the top seed in the state, despite a regular-season loss to Haxtun.
But the Bluejays got their revenge on Friday in the championship game at CSU-Pueblo, flipping the script on the Bulldogs with a dominant 40-0 victory for their first state title in program history.
"I just had the mindset that I'm the best, every time I step on the field," said senior quarterback Kail Wayman, who scored all six of Mancos' touchdowns. "I told the coaches that if we wanted to score to put the ball in my hands — and they did."
Mancos finishes with a 12-1 overall record, which included rattling off a nine-game win streak following the Week 4 defeat.
Haxtun finishes 11-2 as runner-up.
