LONGMONT, Colo. โ The temperature in the air is dropping but they play on the field is heating up.
That's what happens as Colorado high school football comes down the final stretch of the regular season, with league rivals clashing in games with important playoff implications.
On a frigid Friday night in Longmont, that was on display as the Mead Mavericks traveled to face the Frederick Golden Eagles in the 9Preps Game of the Week.
Despite shooting out to a 17-point lead that was later cut to just 3, Frederick did just enough to hold off Mead for the 23-17 victory in a battle of teams fighting to make the Class 3A playoff bracket.
"This was like a win-or-go-home situation and it's a rivalry. We know we have to win this," said Frederick quarterback Gavin Ishmael, who threw two touchdown passes -- both to Burke Eismann. "We came in, we won. It was just an amazing feeling.
Frederick improves to 5-4 overall on the season, while Mead drops to 4-5.
