DENVER — The Cinderella story continues.
Coming into the Class 5A boys basketball state tournament, Regis Jesuit was labeled the 29-seed as one of the outside teams looking in. The Raiders were coming off a huge upset over 4-seed Cherry Creek when they moved on to 13-seed Denver East on Wednesday night in the Sweet 16.
They did it once again, with a 62-58 over the Angels to advance to the Great Eight at the Denver Coliseum.
As they celebrated on the floor at the ThunderDome at Manual High School, it's hard to believe they started the season with nine-straight losses.
"Nobody believed in us. We were 0-9 to start and now we're heading to the final eight. I can't be happier," sophomore Kyle Sandler said. "We know we're the underdogs and we love that."
Denver East grabbed the game's first lead and held it until just before halftime. A 3-pointer from Alonzo Paul gave the Raiders their first lead, 34-31 at half.
The third quarter was extremely low-scoring, which saw Regis Jesuit held scoreless while Denver East only put up six points.
The Raiders bounced back in the final quarter thanks to Sandler's 3-point shooting to secure the lead for good.
"There's no better feeling than winning these games," Sandler said. "Words can't describe it...It was a great team win. We'll see where it goes from here."
Regis Jesuit will next face 5-seed Grandview in the Great Eight at the Coliseum on Saturday.
Boston Stanton Jr. led the Angels in scoring with 23 points, while Patrick Steed scored 18. Denver East's season ends with a 21-4 overall record.
