DENVER — Grandview is no stranger to the 5A girls basketball state championship. The Wolves have made an appearance in the big game for the past three years, winning back-to-back championships in 2017-18 and falling to Cherry Creek in 2019.
The 2020 team made it four-consecutive trips, after a 49-42 win over Valor Christian Thursday night at the Denver Coliseum.
A 17-point night for sophomore Marya Hudgins was capped off by back-to-back three-pointers in the fourth quarter to first give the Wolves the lead, and then seal the game.
"I know there was a little bit of pressure, but I knocked them down and I was really happy about that," Hudgins said, who was 5/5 from three-point range all night.
Senior point guard Tomia Johnson was uncharacteristically quiet on the court with only 5 points on 2/7 shooting, but she was loud about her intentions for the hopeful upcoming rematch with reigning champion Cherry Creek.
"We worked for it. We lost a few early in the season and that's what we want, we want our revenge, obviously," she said. "I think it's going to be a different outcome Saturday, for sure."
Prior to the final 5A game, Johnson noted the talent on both the Creek and Highlands Ranch teams, but there was only one team she wanted to see on the court Saturday afternoon.
"We want Creek, we want Creek."
