GREELEY, Colo. — The Eaton Reds are on a collision course with history.
"You know, not to sound hokey or anything but we always talked about the power of the pinstripes," head coach Todd Hernandez said. "And when we put that jersey on we're playing for everybody who played before us. Everybody's coming after us and we just tried to represent that very well."
The Reds are one win away from that illustrious state title, which would be four straight for the Reds.
"It's awesome. It's history for sure," senior Gunnar Duncan said. "But I mean, I'm so proud of these guys. And you got to give credit to university, heck of a team and just, I'm just so proud of these guys."
Eaton has won 68 consecutive games and counting, a Colorado state record. This Reds team passed the 2010 team at 61, without a loss since 2022.
"After we set the record, we told him to enjoy it," Hernandez said. "But after that, we haven't brought it up. We said that you did it, that's great, but that's not our ultimate goal."
The athletes are buying into the motto, 'the count is zero, jocko.' A punctuation misprint but the translation is clear as day.
"Playing it one game at a time, that's all we can do," senior Garrett Garrison said. "If you get too caught up in the moment you can you seem to lose it sometimes."
For these seniors, they get a chance to go out as four-timers. A rare feat, but what better group to get it done?
"It's huge," senior pitcher Lucas Stone expressed. "I've been playing with these guys for pretty much my entire life, playing baseball with all them. So it's it means a lot to me and working with them and playing with them. It's just been a blessing."
One win away from the most monumental game of the season.
"We know that whoever we play next Saturday it's going to be a dogfight."
In route to the most winningest season of all time.
