LAKEWOOD, Colo. β Marc Johnson is riding off into the sunset on top of the Colorado high school baseball world.
The local legend is calling it a career after 52 seasons as the Cherry Creek head coach. But before he put the bow on an illustrious career, the Bruins sent him off with his ninth state title by defeating Regis Jesuit 5-2 in the Class 5A championship game.
Cherry Creek had to win three times in two days to battle back in the double-elimination tournament. The Bruins blew out the Raiders via mercy rule in Saturday's first game before forcing a winner-take-all matchup in the afternoon.
"It's literally storybook (ending) because our backs were so far against the wall," Johnson said. "It was just a matter of believing in yourself and executing."
Cherry Creek went 25-5-1 overall in route to the championship. Regis Jesuit finished 22-8 as runner-up.
