Heritage coach begins tenure with free basketball clinic

Nearly 60 girls were in attendance for the first free Eagles clinic.

LITTLETON, Colo. — It’s a new era for Heritage girls basketball, where it was announced that Lee Gibson Jr. would be their new head coach.

“We did not have this last year, or the year before that, or the year before that," incoming senior Grace Hankins expressed.

Gibson's first order of business was getting the community involved.

“Why not a free clinic for all the girls in the community?" Gibson said. "I never thought that it would get that big.”

Nearly 60 girls were in attendance for the first free Eagles clinic, in hopes of starting a feeder program to get back to the Heritage program of years past.

“We have to get that crossover right, get that form right, and that's what we're trying to do, get them young and so they have those good habits by the time they get to high school,” Gibson explained.

While helping with camp, the players were also getting to know their coach as they'd never played a game together.

“I feel like he cares a lot more about the program and wants to go in a good direction," Skylar Peterson said. "He wants to see us succeed and not to be like, well I have job experience."

9NEWS asked coach, what’s been the hardest part of the new gig?

“Getting used to everything and the people," Gibson replied. "Where I need to go to get things done, you know.“

With free programs like this, the community is welcoming him just fine.

“We're just looking to take the Heritage girls basketball program to another level, and it starts with the community,” Gibson said.
