Grandview soccer shuts out Cherokee Trail

The No. 4-ranked Wolves blanked the Cougars 2-0 at Legacy Stadium on Tuesday evening.

AURORA – Grandview girls soccer has primarily been a second-half team this season.

Tuesday night was no different as the Wolves, who are ranked No. 4 in Class 5A in the most recent CHSAA rankings, turned it on after halftime in a 2-0 victory over Cherokee Trail at Legacy Stadium.

Although both teams had chances throughout the scoreless first half, Grandview led in time of possession.

Things finally changed in the 58th minute when junior midfielder Jillian Skurcenski fired a shot past the Cougars goalkeeper into the top-left corner of the net for the first goal.

"It's absolutely (a relief) when that happens. Then it's just don't get scored on and we can win it," Grandview goalkeeper Madison Livingston said. "Our defense is so great, and that's also a sense of relief."

Skurcenski was also behind the Wolves' second strike, assisting on Ellie Johnston's goal in the 76th minute to secure the win.

Livingston was credited with the shutout, saving all six of the shots on net she faced.

"In the second half, we definitely connected better, found our chances and finished them," Livingston said. "They (Cherokee Trail) came pretty hard at the end, but we were able to stick it out."

Defending champion Grandview improves to 9-1-1 overall, with a 4-0-1 standing in Centennial League play.

Cherokee Trail falls to 64-, 4-2 CL.
