AURORA, Colo. — One of the shortest putts in Gavin Amella's golf career is the best of his life (so far).
The Castle View junior tapped in on the 18th green at CommonGround Golf Course on Tuesday to become a state champion, winning the 5A boys golf title by one stroke.
"I've been waiting for that moment my whole life," he said. "It's just amazing. I'm at a loss for words right now.
Despite a scare on the final hole of the two-day tournament, Amella did just enough to fend off challenger Michael Rosman of Grandview. Amella carded a 4-under 133 over the two rounds, one better than runner-up Rosman.
Cherry Creek captured the team title as the only school to finish under par. The Bruins cleared runner-up Cherokee Trail by three strokes with a 3-under 423 team score. It is the ninth championship in program history for Cherry Creek, its first since 1973.
