FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Just weeks after the 50 best golfers graced Castle Pines for the BMW Championship, the greatest high school golf spectacle touched down at Harmony Club in Timnath.
“It is the most perfect round of golf I've ever seen. For sure,” head golf coach Jamie Menefee said.
On Aug. 27, Fossil Ridge senior Austin Barry shot a rare score of 13-under-par 59 at Harmony Club, and the preps world went crazy.
“All the attention and all the notifications and texts and everything, just it's kind of unreal,” Barry said.
Just one golfer in the PGA’s history has scored lower — Jim Furyk has the only 58 on the PGA Tour.
“59 is probably similar to a high school pitcher throwing consecutive perfect games," Menefee explained. "Or a high school quarterback throwing for 800 yards. It's just almost unheard of. It's within the realm of possibility, but almost unheard of.”
Barry made five birdies and an eagle to go 29 on the front 9 and a 30 on the back 9, a putt away from a 58.
“He hit it to about three feet on 17 and made it, and then it was like, jeez, just don't mess this up,” Menefee said jokingly.
With his 59, Barry broke the previous school record of 64, set by now Rocky Mountain Open winner Dillon Stewart.
“I just kept hitting really good shots and making a bunch of putts, and I was just on fire the whole day, pretty much,” Barry explained.
Barry led the Sabercats to state in 2022 and for his senior year, wants to take it a step further.
