COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Class 3A boys soccer crown is staying put.
Colorado Academy successfully defended its title with a 3-1 victory over Coal Ridge in the state championship game at Weidner Field on Saturday afternoon to go back-to-back.
The Mustangs' return to the top caps an impressive season during which they went 17-1-2 overall. It is Colorado Academy's seventh title in program history.
"It was hard because we always got everybody's best game," said senior midfielder Simeon Woldeyohannes, who scored the game-winning goal in the 61st minute. "It's awesome to run it back."
Coal Ridge was the Cinderella story of the 3A bracket. The Titans, who finished 12-5-3 overall as runner-up, were the No. 15 seed in the playoff bracket and pulled off three big upsets before running into No. 1 Colorado Academy.
