Colfax Smackdown welcomes in the new year with wrestlers from all around the state

The Colfax Smackdown is back and in its 16th season

DENVER — Local wrestlers returned from winter break this weekend with a tournament that's become a staple not just in Denver, but across the state.

Twelve teams gathered at Denver East High School for the 16th annual Colfax Smackdown.

Chatfield walked away with the team title, while Fruita Monument finished runner-up.

“People are definitely going to be looking out for us now," Chatfield sophomore, Alex Rodriguez said. "There's going to be targets on our backs for sure, but I think we're here to take them on and I'm not worried about it. We're gonna do great for the rest of the year.”

Rodriguez would go on to place 1st in his weight class for the second year in a row.
