GREENWOOD VILLAGE — Stutler Bowl Stadium played host to a 5A top-10 football showdown Friday night.
Top-ranked and undefeated Cherry Creek welcomed Metro East League foe and No. 10 Cherokee Trail.
The Cougars were first to strike on the game-opening drive, which was capped off with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jayden LaVigne to Sean Roberts.
However, the Bruins were quick to respond and show why they're currently the best team in the state.
Cherry Creek took the ensuing possession and turned it into a touchdown of their own on a 1-yard punch-in from Jayle Stacks. The Bruins added a late second-quarter score in form of a 16-yard pass from Alex Padilla to Chase Penry to take a 14-7 lead at halftime.
A strong second half helped the Bruins start to create enough distance to ride to victory. They added a touchdown in the third quarter and two more in the fourth to cruise to the 35-14 win.
Cherry Creek remains undefeated, now 9-0; while Cherokee Trail falls to 7-2.
