AURORA, Colo. — Instead of a New Year's resolution, the Cherokee Trail Cougars are encouraging everyone to create a habit of spreading kindness.
"It takes 21 days to form a habit," Unified athletics president, Kadee Green said. "So we spread kindness for 21 days to create a habit inside your own life."
To spread awareness, the 'Be Kind' organization hosted a Pack the Gym with Kindness event to sell out the unified basketball game against the Grandview Wolves.
"What better way than to bring the unified kids in with the whole student body and just be kind," Kennedy Brian said, member of the 'Be Kind' campaign.
Along with the Pack the Gym event, the club hosted new events like the Turkey Trot in November, which included a lot of local businesses joining the efforts.
The Be Kind Club sells shirts and hoodies with the message ‘Be kind.’ in 21 different colors and all of the funds from the sales go back to helping the community. Most recently, CTHS sent more than $2,000 to a high school in Lahaina, Hawaii, where the wildfires destroyed their school in August. That money was used to purchase caps and gowns for the 2024 graduates.
"Hawaii is so far away, and it was a way that we could all help and put out our generosity to give them some money that they desperately needed," club member Braedan Reichert said.
In February, the club will be supporting Make-A-Wish during Wish Week and the district during the food drive for local food banks.
