The Denver Outlaws are out to defend their Major League Lacrosse crown for the 2019 season.

So far, so good.

Denver kicked off its season with an 11-9 win over the New York Lizards on the road Friday night. Another big story line for the Outlaws this year is Colorado lacrosse John Grant Jr. coming out of retirement to serve as a player-coach.

So it was fitting that Grant Jr., age 44, scored the first goal of the season on the first shot by the team. He finished with two points after later adding an assist.

Four players — Brendan Kavanagh, Tim Barber, Ryan Lee and Christopher Aslanian — scored two goals each for Denver.

Grant Jr., Mike Schlosser and Matt Gilray contributed one goal apiece. Kavanagh led the Outlaws with four total points after dishing out a pair of assists.

Denver also got an impressive performance from goaltender Dillon Ward, who saved 19 of the 28 shots he faced in net.

The Outlaws (1-0) will next play the Atlanta Blaze on the road at 2 p.m. Sunday.
