LAS VEGAS — The defending champion LSU Tigers are intimidating enough on the court with stars like Angel Reese and the newly acquired Hailey Van Lith from Louisville, but their head coach Kim Mulkey provides another threat to any opponent who stands in their way.
Mulkey, a four-time national championship winning head coach, has become more talked about recently for her flamboyant outfits on the sideline than her outstanding coaching record of 692–112 overall.
When her no. 1 Tigers take the court to open up the season against the no. 20 CU Buffs in Las Vegas on Monday November 6, there could be a challenger stepping up to the plate.
"It's funny because Jay [graduate point guard Jaylyn Sherrod] told me months ago when the game was announced, she said 'Coach J you CANNOT wear a golf shirt that game!' and I said, 'you've got to help me find an outfit then!'"
Sherrod isn't too convinced they'll be able to get their coach into the signature feathers and sequins.
"Knowing Coach J, she just doesn't care about stuff like that so it will be really hard for us to get her into something like that," Sherrod said. "I'd do something like all white or all black based on the jersey. Just something subtle. You don't have to wear all of the feathers and everything like that but something all black like a pantsuit like she about her business."
Senior center Quay Miller had some harsh words for her coach.
"I told her, 'J, if you don't come steppin' just coach from a phone, you have to step, because Coach Mulkey is always coming prepared and we can't be getting shown up," Miller said.
Junior point guard Kindyll Wetta is more confident in her coach's offensive game plan than she is the style department.
"I have absolutely no advice for her and I think she should wear whatever she feels comfortable in," Wetta said. "Definitely no sequins or craziness, that's just not her. But JR is amazing and needs to be true to who she is on game day."
