DENVER — This is Day Three of the new pitch clock rules in Major League Baseball, and I am all in -- All in!
I've always loved baseball. I stunk at it but loved watching it, but it got too slow for me. I was done with four-hour baseball games during the regular season.
Now if it's playoffs? Okay fine, things can slow down. I grew up on Yankees-Red Sox four-hour playoff games, but those are different. Playoff baseball is special.
Last season, the average MLB game lasted 3 hours and 3 minutes.
Three days of a 15-second pitch clock in spring training and we're seeing games last just 2 hours and 29 minutes, 2 hours and 33 minutes.
We even saw a game on Saturday end in a tie in the bottom of the 9th inning with the bases loaded, because the batter was not set in the batter's box in time. Game-changing stuff.
Baseball has needed a change. It was losing people like me and I didn't want that. But all the stepping on and off the mound, taking time in the batters box had run its course.
I'm a Gen Z'er. My attention span isn't great, but I still love the game and want to watch it. I just have no interest in watching a four-hour baseball game on a Tuesday night in late July.
So MLB, thank you for the pitch clock. It may just re-energize the sport.
