DENVER — We are 17 days away from when Rockies pitchers and catchers will report for spring training. Opening Day is March 30.
When I read this quote from Rockies owner Dick Monfort, all I could do was laugh a little and shake my head. While Monfort was speaking to a crowd at the annual Northern Colorado Friends of Baseball breakfast in Greeley on Saturday, he said: "I think we can play .500 ball this year."
You "think?" .500 ball? Yeah, that's exciting.
Monfort keeps alluding to the fact that young talent is coming.
With four players being named to the top 100 prospects list by MLB Pipeline, Monfort said: "I kid you not, there could have been 15."
Um... so why weren't there, then?
And what good does it do for the Rockies to have great young talent that they develop, only to have them leave when it comes time to sign them to long-term extensions?
This team won't be very good, so the ".500 ball" comment from Monfort is right.
But it's the fact that he even has to say that -- .500 shouldn't be a goal for a team that's starving for a playoff berth.
At what point will all the losing hurt Monfort and the front office so much that they have to change course?
