DENVER — On the morning of arguably the greatest day in women's college basketball history, we weren't celebrating the game — we were again putting it down.
Lynette Woodard, a Hall of Famer who held the scoring record that Caitlin Clark broke, was speaking at the Women's Basketball Coaches Association convention in Cleveland, and was recorded saying that because the two played under different rules — i.e. playing with a men's ball and not having a 3-point line — Clark's milestone is not the same as Woodard's. The video now has over 9 million views on social media.
Why can't we just celebrate the game?
Clark praised Woodard when she broke her record, but now Woodard is acting petty. I don't think she should have said this at all.
Times are different, that's obvious. Records are meant to be broken. It's part of the game.
We see this example all the time in the NBA — the old heads get bitter about the new stars making more money, breaking records or having it easier. It's pretty annoying to listen to. It's the "get off my lawn" mentality.
Sunday was a special day and it should have been all about celebrating, not about someone who hasn't been thought about much — until recently — because of Caitlin Clark.
