'Humbled and blessed': 9NEWS anchor leaving to join Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs said Thursday they hired Jacob Tobey as their new television play-by-play announcer.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs announced Thursday the hiring of 9NEWS Sports anchor Jacob Tobey as the team's new TV play-by-play announcer.

Tobey has been a sports anchor at 9NEWS since 2020, while also being a play-by-play announcer for various networks, including Fox Sports and Pac-12 Network.

"I am so excited, humbled and blessed to live out my childhood dream by joining a first-class organization," Tobey said. "I love the NBA and I cannot wait to be part of the Spurs family! Let’s get to work, San Antonio!"

Tobey will join commentator Sean Elliott in the Spurs broadcast booth, filling the role previously held by longtime announcer Bill Land who recently announced his retirement.

"I will be taking time to respond to everyone but I just wanted to say thank you so much to 9NEWS and 9NEWS Sports for an amazing four years," said Tobey. "I came to Denver during COVID and it was rough at first, but grateful for all the experiences I had here."

Tobey makes his Spurs debut when the preseason tips off Monday, Oct. 7, against Oklahoma City. Tobey's last day at 9NEWS will be Oct. 19.

"We're thrilled to welcome Jacob to the Spurs family," said Mike Kickirillo, Spurs Senior Director of Broadcast. "His passion for the game, combined with his broadcast experience and holistic sports knowledge, make him a perfect fit for our team. We're confident that Spurs fans will quickly embrace Jacob's energy and insightful commentary."

A native of Sandwich, Massachusetts, Tobey graduated from Suffolk University after completing internships with the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots. He's also been a sports anchor at KJRH-TV in Tulsa.
