DENVER — Denver sports legend Chauncey Billups has been elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, according to a report by Shams Charania of The Athletic.
The official announcement of the Hall of Fame Class of 2024 will happen Saturday during the Final Four of the men's NCAA basketball tournament. Former All-Star Vince Carter will also be inducted, Charania reports.
Billups was a standout at Denver's George Washington High School and a star at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Currently the head coach of the Portland Trailblazers, Billups played 17 seasons in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.
Billups won the 2004 NBA championship with the Pistons and was named NBA Finals MVP.
After Billups was named as a finalist for the Hall of Fame in February, he said that level of achievement wasn't something he allowed himself to dream about.
"I dreamed about making it to the NBA. Then I dreamed about being a champion. All-Star. I never even really dreamed about the Hall of Fame, which I call basketball heaven," Billups said. "It's awesome to be in it, to have a chance at it. I'll be waiting by my phone to see if I make it."
The induction ceremony will take place in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Aug. 17.
