KUSA – It was the Super Bowl commercial that you couldn’t get out of your head ... even if you wanted to. But our 9NEWS Expert Opinion panel says the Mountain Dew “Puppy Monkey Baby” commercial was disturbingly perfect.
Public relations expert Ron Harman King, CEO of Vanguard Communications, says an advertising agency likely spent a huge amount of time and money developing what would eventually be a perfect concept for a specific audience.
“If you don’t like this commercial and you think it’s weird, the product’s not for you,” King said.
Psychotherapist Dr. Peggy Mitchell Clarke says there’s a psychological reason why we gravitate towards the commercial even if we don’t necessarily like it.
“When you have something that’s ambiguous, that’s unexpected, it catches your attention,” she said. “See? We’re talking about it now.”
But comedian Stephanie McHugh thinks the Puppy Monkey Baby commercial could have taken things one step further.
“I wanted to see it riding a pony with a kitten," McHugh said.
