ESTES PARK — Out of the 109 years at the Stanley Hotel, Activities Director Jill Schladweiler never heard of activity like this.

"When you've been open this long, it's amazing when you get to see something for the very first time," Schladweiler said.

Around 4 a.m. Thursday, Schladweiler says the night supervisor captured video of a black bear going through the lobby, checking out a couch and coffee table before heading downstairs and out of a side door.

"You know, this is something we've never experienced, the Stanley's been open for 109 years," Schladweiler said.

This historic hotel draws many tourists usually interested in the history of the building, the owners, and the ghost stories.

"Of course, The Shining," visitor Kelli Grace Stassel said.

Stephen King stayed at The Stanley Hotel and was inspired to write the famous horror story. But. the talk Friday afternoon was the curious bear.

"It was very humorous and wondered how much damage the bear did if any," visitor Gary Phelps said.

Schladweiler says she was surprised at the answer.

"No damage to the table. No damage to the couch," Schladweiler said.

No damage, but tourists have one more story to tell about the historic Stanley Hotel.

"The Stanley has a lot of stories to tell and I think that's one of the coolest parts about it," Schladweiler said.
