Craigslist prank goes wrong: Woman does not have koala

A Longmont woman, it turns out, was not giving away a koala.
Fake Craigslist ad for a free koala

LONGMONT - A Longmont woman was confused when her phone started ringing off the hook Friday morning. She was even more perplexed when the callers were inquiring about a koala.

It turns out she was the butt of an odd prank.

A Craigslist post had gone up, advertising little "Kenny." Kenny was supposedly a koala up for grabs for those interested. For free. The post advertised a phone number and for the inquirer to ask for "Gina."

Spoiler alert: Gina does not exist. The number was real though and went straight to that woman in Longmont.

The ad looked real enough to convince Longmont animal control officers who went up to the woman's house, according to Jeff Satur with Longmont Police. They searched her home, and no koala was found.

This just goes to show you that you should never trust a free koala offer.

The homeowner said she has no idea who would do this to her.

When 9NEWS did a reverse image search for the photo used in the Craigslist ad, it linked to a Huffington Post article about an orphaned koala who took the Internet by storm. Back in 2012.

The victim wished to remain anonymous.
