Two bodies discovered near area where missing teens' abandoned car found

DOUGLAS COUNTY - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office believes two bodies found in a field are those of two missing Highlands Ranch teen-agers.

9NEWS Reporter Paul Johnson talks with investigators about the two bodies found in Douglas County, 10 p.m., May 6, 2003.

The bodies were discovered around noon Tuesday near I-70 and Gun Club Road. A farmer on his ATV found them in his field.

Investigators say the bodies have been there for quite awhile, at least 30 days. But they weren't giving details on why they believe the bodies could be Shawn Cerniglia, 16, and his girlfriend, Carrie Lynn Heiden, 18. They don't want to tip off a potential suspect about the kind of evidence they have, if they determine it's a murder case.

The field is near the area where police found Cerniglia's abandoned car with its interior burned out on Feb. 6. Cerniglia and Heiden were last seen Feb. 5.

Authorities have contacted the families of Cerniglia and Heiden. Positive identification won't likely happen until autopsies have been conducted.
