WATKINS, Colo. — Engineers at a U.K. company called “Reaction Engines” are testing out a new rocket engine at the Colorado Air and Space Port near Watkins.
This new SABRE engine contains a precooler technology to withstand the high-temperatures in supersonic flight conditions.
The engine has successfully passed its first phase of high-temperature testing that is being done to replicate supersonic flight conditions.
Future tests at higher temperatures are being planned for this engine. The next test will put the engine conditions at five-times the speed of sound. This speed is roughly the same speed of a one-hour flight from New York to London.
You can read their Reaction Engine’s full description of the engine and the initial test results here.
