The 8-week-old victim of child abuse dies

DENVER - A court had given the grandparents of 8-week-old Tanner Dowler the authority to make medical decisions for him. This weekend, he was taken off of a ventilator.

The baby boy had a severe brain injury, broken arms, legs and ribs.

His grandparents released a statement to 9NEWS Sunday, a day after Tanner's death. They thanked the Denver Health Medical Center, the people who cared for Tanner and the thousands who have been touched by his story.

Tanner was originally taken to a hospital in Lafayette by his parents on Oct. 3. He had stopped eating and was unresponsive.

Joseph Dowler, 34, of Lafayette, faces 12 counts of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. He was being held under $1 million bail and was scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing Dec. 17.

Tanner's mother, Audra Dowler, 19, also of Lafayette, is in jail under $500,000 bail. She is scheduled to be formally charged Oct. 23.

Both may face stronger charges now that Tanner has died.
