KUSA - Social media (and 9NEWS' phones) blew up at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday with reports of a bright ball falling from the sky with a green tail trailing behind it.
The ball was visible in California as well as parts of Arizona and Colorado.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department confirmed the bright light to be a Naval test fire off the coast.
The ball was easy to attribute to an annual astronomical event that's especially visible this year: the Taurid meteor shower.
