A burning holiday tradition in Colorado

Christmas tree removal in Crested Butte is a celebration.
Flames reached as high as 50 feet.

CRESTED BUTTE- The holiday tree season is over and many people are taking their trees to recycling spots across the metro area. In Crested Butte, the tree removal process is more of a celebration.

On Wednesday, town residents celebrated Twelfth Night by burning their Christmas trees. This is the fourth time they've celebrated the day, which lands twelve days after Christmas.

"This community loves to gather for any kind of party, or fiesta," David Ochs with the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce, said. "A good bonfire is no exception."

Ochs said the town burned about 250 trees behind the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce Wednesday night. Many community members stopped by to see the flames which, at times, reached 50 feet high.

"It's the perfect time of year for this," Ochs said. "We're surrounded by snow. I don't want to say nothing can go wrong—but in many ways, nothing can go wrong."

The Crested Butte fire inspector made sure everything stayed under control, and the three inches of snow that fell Wednesday night helped as well.
