Kamala Harris' historic presidential inspiring young women, girls to dream big

Vice President Kamala Harris has officially secured the Democratic nomination, making her the first woman of color to top the ticket for any major political party.

DENVER — Vice President Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate Monday. Her pick for VP came just hours after Harris officially secured the Democratic nomination. She's the first woman of color to top the ticket for any major political party.

Already, Harris is inspiring young girls like Girl Scout Jillian Ingle to dream big.

Ingle's Girl Scout vest is packed full of badges that represent her accomplishments. "Archery, woodwork, this is my vet badge," she said.

But there's one experience with the scouts where the memory won't quite fit on the fabric. Last year, she and her dad, along with her fellow scouts, were able to see Vice President Harris speak in Denver.

"I got to see her talk," Ingle said. "I really wanted to go see her live because obviously, she's a really big role model to me and has just shown like, she can do anything she puts her mind to which makes me think I can do anything I put my mind to."

At 14 years old, Ingle is watching as the nation's first female Vice President runs to become the first female President.

"I had a lot of thoughts go through my head. I just thought it was such a cool thing. She's a role model for a lot of young girls and it shows, you can do anything you can put your mind to," Ingle said.

With memes, TikToks and videos, Harris' campaign is taking the internet by storm. "Yes. I've seen so many edits and like everything, everyone is so excited," Ingle said.

Harris' run for the White House is a topic Ingle and her friends talk about all the time. "The things that she's going to be able to do and the things she'll be able to accomplish while she's president," she said.

"I love how she doesn't really care what other people think," Ingle said. "She knows that she can do anything."

Watching a woman of color on the path to presidency she said is inspiring. And it's encouraging Ingle and so many other young women to dream big.

"It will be honestly amazing, just because she'll open so many doors for everyone," Ingle said.

She said it's hard to believe that in more than 200 years, this nation has never had a woman at the helm.

"I think it's crazy. And she's going to do so well if she becomes president," Ingle said. "And I hope that it shows other women that they can do anything and I hope other female candidates roll for the future years to come."
