Gabe Evans wins GOP nomination in CD8

GOP candidates Gabe Evans and Janak Joshi sought the opportunity to unseat Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo in Colorado's 8th Congressional District.

COLORADO, USA — Gabe Evans has won the Republican primary for Colorado's 8th Congressional District, a U.S. House seat narrowly won by a Democrat in 2022.

Evans, a state representative from Fort Lupton, and former physician Janak Joshi were on the ballot to compete against Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo for the district's battleground seat.

Caraveo, a pediatrician and former state lawmaker, ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

The district includes large population hubs like Thornton, Commerce City and Greeley, marking it as a competitive district that encompasses both suburban and rural voters north and east of Denver.

The 8th District's active voter makeup is 25% registered Democrat, 22% Republican, and 49% Unaffiliated, according to the May numbers from the Colorado Secretary of State's Office.

Evans, an Army veteran and former Arvada police officer, was formally endorsed by former President Donald Trump on June 3.

Trump said Evans had his "complete and total endorsement" in a post on his Truth Social account. In February, Evans was endorsed by U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who also added Evans to a list of participants in the speaker's joint fundraising committee.

Rep. Gabe Evans talks to well-wishers before the first Republican primary debate for the 8th Congressional district seat Jan. 25 in Fort Lupton.

Joshi immigrated to the U.S. from India more than 50 years ago. In 2008, he voluntarily surrendered his medical license after the state suspended it in 2007 for "unprofessional conduct" relating to the treatment of a 76-year-old patient. He was endorsed by the Colorado Republican Party before Trump endorsed Evans.

In their announcement of the endorsement, the state party cited Evans' refusal to fill out a questionnaire distributed by the state party as a reason for their lack of support. The questionnaire asked eligible candidates about their history of voting for Trump as well as their positions on immigration, gun control and vaccination requirements.

The questionnaire also asked candidates to denounce Americans for Prosperity, the conservative political network founded by the Koch brothers, which has endorsed Evans.
