George Brauchler leads in Republican primary for district attorney in Colorado's new judicial district

The 23rd judicial district will encompass Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties.

COLORADO, USA — George Brauchler is leading over Dagna Van Der Jagt in the Republican primary for Colorado's first new judicial district in 60 years.

Whoever wins the Republican nomination will go up against Democrat Karen Breslin in the general election in November.

The 23rd Judicial District will comprise Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties. Those three counties are currently in the 18th Judicial District along with Arapahoe County, which will have the 18th to itself as of Jan. 7, 2025.

Brauchler, of Parker, is the former district attorney for the 18th Judicial District. According to his campaign website, Brauchler has also served as a special assistant U.S. attorney, military prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, military defense attorney, and the chief of military justice for Fort Carson, the 4th Infantry Division, and the U.S. Division North in Tikrit, Iraq.

He prosecuted cases for the shootings at the Aurora movie theater, STEM School Highlands Ranch and Columbine High School. He continues to serve as a colonel in the Colorado National Guard.

Van Der Jagt is a lawyer in Castle Rock. According to her campaign website, she said she will fight against radical, unconstitutional laws that strip away Coloradans' liberties and rights. She said she holds the Constitution as the rigid and firm foundation of all laws.

The sole Democratic candidate, Breslin, is a political science professor at the University of Colorado Denver. She's also the former program manager and policy advisor for the National Park Service.
