Election results: Greg Lopez wins special election to finish Ken Buck's term in Congress for CD4

After Republican Congressman Ken Buck's early retirement, voters decided who would finish his term.

COLORADO, USA — Republican Greg Lopez won the special election deciding who would finish Republican U.S. Rep, Ken Buck's term through December.

Voters in Colorado's 4th Congressional District had an extra race on their ballot due to the early retirement of Republican U.S. Rep. Ken Buck.

On the same ballot, voters chose a candidate to send to the general election in November to take over Buck's seat starting in January. Buck said in November that he would not be seeking reelection to Congress after having served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2014.

The 4th Congressional District includes Highlands Ranch, Parker, Castle Rock, Loveland, Wellington and the Eastern Plains.

The results are below for the special election:

Greg Lopez, the former mayor of Parker, was the Republican nominee for the special election. He is also the former director of the Colorado Small Business Administration and the former CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Greg Lopez, who won the top line on the GOP primary ballot for governor in 2022, wanted to ban mail-in voting. Records showed Lopez voted by mail every time since Colorado gave all voters the option in 2013.

Lopez was also arrested in 1993 for assaulting his pregnant wife. During his gubernatorial run, Lopez said he was a pro-life candidate, without exceptions for rape, incest, and life or health of the mother.

Lopez competed against Democrat Trisha Calvarese, Libertarian Hannah Goodman and Approval Voting Party candidate Frank Atwood.

A self-described New Deal Democrat, Calvarese was born in Sterling and grew up in Highlands Ranch before launching a career that included political work for the AFL-CIO and the Office of Legislative and Public Affairs at the U.S. National Science Foundation, according to Colorado Politics.

CD4 has the safest Republican seat in Colorado. The voter makeup is 47% unaffiliated, 35% Republican and 17% Democrat.
