Black women rally for Harris campaign

Portia Prescott, president of the Rocky Mountain NAACP, said she supported Harris's bid for president in 2019 and she's ready to stand behind her again.

DENVER — Win with Black Women (WWBW), a community organization based out of Washington, D.C., claims it hosted a Zoom call with more than 44,000 Black female attendees Sunday night.

During the three-hour call, WWBW says it raised $1.5M for the Kamala Harris' presidential campaign.

"It’s one of the things that has brought Black women together in a time where we felt so divided," Rocky Mountain NAACP President Portia Prescott said. "I think it was just, for the first time, I woke up and was like, 'Yes.' Not only are we here for each other, but we’re here for our country now. Yes, it’s Black women who are going to save America."

Prescott said she was on Sunday night's WWBW call. She said supporting Harris for the presidential seat is inspiring and emotional.

"From the moment of the announcement, those women went into action," Prescott said. "Not only did they go into action, they brought us all into action."

Prescott said she was proud of the quick mobilization of Black women for Harris.

"I think the power of what just happened, white people underestimated," Prescott said. "Especially the other side, they did not understand the power of Black women. You have the Trump campaign scrambling to figure how are they are going to fight Kamala. They are not ready for a real, thorough, brilliant, educated, woman of color."

9NEWS reached out to WWBW for documentation showing the number of attendees and amount of money raised but did not hear back.

Prescott said she is looking forward to supporting Harris, not only as a Black woman, but also as Harris's sorority sister. Prescott said she's been a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for the last 30 years.

"There was a sisterhood that was always there to support me, no matter where I go, no matter what I do," Prescott explained.

She said she is excited to continue to extend sisterly support to Harris.

"Now knowing Kamala can rely on us, we’ve always got her back," Prescott said. "Through her, we see ourselves there."

Prescott said the support for Harris goes beyond just her sorority. Monday, the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Presidents announced its collective call to members to vote.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. operates under the NPHC umbrella alongside eight other sororities and fraternities. NPHC has several hundreds of thousands of members worldwide.

"The comradery of my sorority sisters, Black women and the Divine 9, all us Greeks coming together," Prescott said.

She said she's confident by the end of the year, she'll see herself reflected in the presidential office, in more ways than one.

"We came together to make history already once, making her the vice president and now, knowing we can make her the first and finest AKA to bring her back, bring it on home, it is like the most amazing feeling ever," Prescott said.
