LAKEWOOD – Detectives with the Lakewood Police Department's Traffic Unit say a distracted driver caused a deadly crash that killed a woman and injured a child Thursday afternoon.
The call came in around 4:46 p.m. Police say the two-car crash happened on West 6th Avenue near Zang Street. The impact sent one car, a Toyota 4Runner, off the roadway and across the light rail tracks. The 4Runner rolled over several times and fell about 12 feet before landing roughly 400 feet away, according to police.
The victim has been identified as Kimberly Henderson, 51 from Golden. A young boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Police say just before the crash, a passenger in the black Ford Focus was fiddling with the radio and accidentally hit the steering wheel causing the car to veer to the left. The 35-year-old driver overcorrected and hit the 4Runner.
Investigators say the driver is still responsible. He faces charges of careless driving resulting in injury and death.
