Negotiations set to resume this weekend as King Soopers strike looms

Both sides will get back to the bargaining table this weekend, despite the union voting to authorize a strike last week.

DENVER — Representatives from King Soopers and the union that represents about 12,000 grocery workers across the state are scheduled to meet this weekend as a potential strike looms.

A spokesperson for King Soopers said on Monday that the two sides planned to meet on Saturday but did not have specific details about when and where they would meet.

That news comes after members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 7 voted last week to authorize a strike. There's no timeline on when or if workers will hit the picket line, but the vote allows union leaders to call for a strike at any time.

Their current contract expired Jan. 12 and bargaining has been ongoing since mid-December, the union said.

The biggest sticking points are wage increases and sick pay.

Right now King Soopers' current offer includes sick pay for employees on and after the third day they're out sick, with a doctors note. The union president said they'd like sick pay to start on day one.

More than 12,000 workers represented by UFCW Local 7 work at 109 King Soopers and City Market stores in Colorado. The last strike was in 1996, according to King Soopers.
