DENVER - How it was lost remains a 70-year mystery. The USS Grayling SS-209 was last heard from on Aug. 19, 1943 and it officially was presumed lost on Sept. 30, 1943.
On Saturday over 100 gathered for a memorial service at the USS Grayling Memorial site at Sloan's Lake
Vice Admiral Albert H Konetzni, Jr. USN-Ret. was the key note speaker. The memorial included a fly-over of a Navy Trainer AT-6/SNJ Texan, tolling of the boats, flag ceremony, rifle salute and taps.
The tolling of the boat is a time to remember every U.S. ship lost, along with those serving on the ship. The name of each lost ship, along with circumstances what happened to the ship is followed by the tolling of a bell.
The Navy Honor Guard from Navy Information Operations Command, Colorado, the All Veterans Honor Guard from American Legion Wilmore-Richter Post #161 Arvada, the U. S. Sea Cadets Lexington Division, Jack Cronin, pilot, and SSgt Lance Christensen of the 101st Army Band, bugler took part in the memorial.
