NAGS HEAD, N.C. — One person and a dog died in a boating accident on the Outer Banks, the Coast Guard confirmed to 13News Now, while one person is still missing.
The person who died was Capt. Charlie Griffin, who was best known for being on the television show "Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks," according to Outer Banks journalist Sam Walker. The Coast Guard hasn't confirmed this information with 13News Now.
The investigation began when the Coast Guard 5th District received a notice that a boat was overdue on March 3 around 11:35 p.m. The boat had left from Virginia Beach and headed to Wanchese, North Carolina, for repairs.
The last communication with the boat was March 3 around 6:15 p.m. and the boat was near Nags Head at the time, a Coast Guard spokesperson told 13News Now.
According to Walker's reporting, the person, presumably Griffin, and the dog were found onshore on Pea Island.
To find the other person, the Coast Guard said units are searching the shorelines using ATVs and a cutter on the water. A chopper from USCG Elizabeth City was conducting aerial searches before the weather got bad.
Griffin's Facebook page, "Reels Of Fortune Wicked Tuna," announced the captain death's on Monday afternoon.
"It is with the deepest sadness we report that Charlie Griffin and his beloved dog, Leila, have passed away in a boating accident today, March 4th," the post read. "Please keep family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. We will forever remember Griff!"
