A tiny resort town in New Hampshire gives the first results from the 2024 election

The town’s six voters began casting their ballots at the stroke of midnight and the vote count was complete 15 minutes later.

WASHINGTON — In a presidential election that couldn’t be closer, it seemed fitting that the first votes cast on Election Day were evenly split, with three for Donald Trump and three for Kamala Harris.

The tiny New Hampshire resort town Dixville Notch has a tradition that dates back to 1960 for being the first in the nation to complete in-person voting on Election Day.

After a rousing accordion version of the national anthem, the town’s six voters began casting their ballots at the stroke of midnight and the vote count was complete 15 minutes later.

For those waiting anxiously for results from around the country, Dixville Notch is technically the first voting district to announce results. With such a tiny sample of voters, the results are not typically indicative of how an election will end up. But they do provide for an early curiosity.

In some previous elections, a couple of other tiny New Hampshire towns have also voted at midnight, but this year Dixville Notch went it alone.

Town Moderator Tom Tillotson accepts the first ballot from Les Otten during the midnight vote on Election Day, Nov. 5, 2024, in Dixville Notch, N.H.

The voting took place in a new location in 2024, the living room of Tillotson House, with the traditional polling place, Balsams Resort, undergoing renovations.

Despite the equal tallies from Dixville Notch, the rest of New Hampshire's votes will likely be more lopsided. The state is considered Democratic-leaning, and will likely give its four Electoral College votes to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris and former President Donald Trump have finished their campaigns after a last-day dash through the battlegrounds in a final attempt to sway some of the few swing voters in America. Because the election between the two is expected to be incredibly close, it's unlikely that the U.S. will know their next president by the end of Tuesday, with election officials warning that it may take days before we have a winner.
