NEW YORK — The queen is coming — back to movie screens.
Following confirmation that a 'Princess Diaries 3' movie was in the works, Anne Hathaway confirmed she will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis in the latest installment.
Hathaway posted a video on social media with the movie announcement and clips of her younger self and Julie Andrews in the original film and sequel saying the iconic 'Princess Diaries' line, "Shut up!"
“Miracles happen,” Hathaway wrote in the caption. “Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues.”
"The Princess Diaries" premiered in 2001, launching a young Anne Hathaway to fame as Mia Thermopolis, the high schooler who learns she's actually heir to the throne of the fictional country of Genovia. Hathaway and co-star Julie Andrews both returned for the 2004 sequel, "The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement." It's not clear whether Andrews will return for the third installment of the franchise.
Adele Lim has signed on to direct the third installment of the beloved franchise. The first two films were directed by the late Garry Marshall. Plot details for the threequel haven't been released. The series is based on a series of books by Meg Cabot.
"As a diehard fan of the original 'Princess Diaries,' I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life," Lim said in a statement released to Variety and Deadline.
Hathaway is also set to return for the sequel of the 2006 movie "The Devil Wears Prada," which was confirmed earlier this year.
