Will Grier expected to be eligible to play for West Virginia at the start of the 2017 season, Mountaineers coach Dana Holgorsen said in a statement Friday.
“Will Grier enrolled for classes here at WVU on May 16," the statement said. "With the timing of his transfer, and the requirements that he has to finish from the NCAA, I cannot officially confirm his eligibility until the summer of 2017. However, I fully anticipate him being eligible for the opening game of the 2017 season.”
Grier's eligibility had been unclear because the NCAA suspended him for a calendar year after a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance that Grier has publicly said to be related to an over-the-counter supplement. He appealed, but the NCAA upheld the suspension.
Grier will sit out next season to fulfill NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Grier played six games last season for the Gators as a redshirt freshman.
