UN worker kidnapped in Congo found dead

The body of American United Nations worker, with ties to Denver, was found in Congo on Monday.

The body of American United Nations worker, with ties to Denver, was found in Congo on Monday.

Michael Sharp, 34, among six people who were kidnapped in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Three bodies were found Monday. On Tuesday, they were identified as Michael Sharp, Zaida Catalan, a U.N. worker from Sweden, and interpreter Betu Tshintela.

Those three, along with three drivers, were abducted on March 12 in Congo's Central Kasai province. They were in the area to look into recent violence there.

Sharp has immediate family members in the Denver area. On March 15, a vigil was held at DU to honor Sharp and his family. It was organized by a close friend of his who is a professor at the school.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the cause of death for Sharp and Catalan has not been determined yet. He has called for an official inquiry into their deaths.
