TV tonight: Shark Week begins, 'Game of Thrones' finale

Shark Week
Discovery, 8 ET/PT

Shark Week
Discovery, 8 ET/PT

It’s back: that semi-scientific, sea-based film festival that fans of seal- and penguin-chomping love and sharks despise, assuming sharks have any idea so many of us have become obsessed with them. The week kicks off Sunday with three films: Tiger Beach (8 ET/PT), Return of Monster Mako (9 ET/PT) and Isle of Jaws (10 ET/PT) — followed by Shark After Dark (11 ET/PT). If you’re looking for the yin and yang of Shark Week, an event that has mostly succeeded in making people over-estimate the risk of shark attacks and underestimate the risk we pose to sharks’ survival, you’ll find it in two upcoming films: Sharks Among Us (Monday, 10 ET/PT), which attempts to calm shark-attack anxiety and convince us man and animal can coexist; and Wrath of a Great White Serial Killer (Tuesday, 9 ET/PT) — the goal of which is pretty self-evident.

Game of Thrones/Ray Donovan
HBO/Showtime, 9 ET/PT

Your TV shows, they come and they go. Premium cable’s biggest hit, HBO's Game of Thrones, exits, while Showtime’s Donovan returns.

Showtime, 10 ET/PT

Oscar winner Cameron Crowe returns to his rock-music wheelhouse. Produced by Crowe, J.J. Abrams and Winnie Holzman, and starring Luke Wilson and Carla Gugino, the series focuses on the backstage workers struggling to keep a touring rock band’s show on track.
