An Italian paramedic is on trial for allegedly stealing James Gandolfini's Rolex as he lay dying in June 2013, according to NBC News and the Telegraph.
Claudio Bevilacqua, 43, was one of the paramedics who arrived to revive Gandolfini after he suffered a massive heart attack while on vacation in Rome with his wife and son. Gandolfini was taken to a local hospital, but died after attempts to revive him. The Sopranos star was 51.
Bevilacqua went on trial on Monday for allegedly stealing Gandolfini's $3,000 Rolex Submariner timepiece, but did not appear for the brief proceedings, and therefore did not offer a plea.
NBC News notes it is still unclear whether the watch vanished from Gandolfini's room in the Boscolo Exedra Hotel in Rome or whether the actor was wearing it when he collapsed. According to the Telegraph, the watch was officially reported as stolen on an insurance form filed by Mr Gandolfini’s family.
The Italian judge postponed the start of the trial until November.
