NORTHGLENN – An 8-year-old boy from Northglenn has taken it upon himself to help out a group of homeless veterans living in Denver.
The idea came to Gavin Bagford one evening while he was chatting with his mom.
"I was cooking dinner one night and he came in and said, 'Mom, I have an idea'" Annie Bagford, Gavin's mom, said. "I said 'what's your idea?' And he said, 'I want to help homeless people'. And I said, 'what do you mean?' He goes, 'I'm tired of seeing them dying'. I started crying because no kid should know that".
Gavin was referring to homeless veterans in particular.
"I think I should help homeless veterans because they've saved our country also," he said.
And so, with that idea, he started raising funds. He made enough money to create 30 survival kits for homeless veterans.
The kits include hats, Chap Stick, soap, socks, first-aid kits and several other items.
Gavin and his family plan to hand them out at their local VA clinic on Saturday.
