Man sentenced to prison for lying in fatal Jet Ski accident

JEFFERSON COUNTY - A year after 9-year-old Alyssa Jostad was killed at Chatfield Reservoir, the last of the seven defendants involved in the fatal Jet Ski collision has been sentenced.

The prosecutor showed video where Hurtado lies outright to sheriff's investigators, saying he was the owner of the watercraft that killed Jostad. She was on a raft in Chatfield Reservoir on June 23 last year when two teenage girls ran into her with the Jet Ski.

The seven people charged in the case tried to cover up the accident and lied about who owned the Jet Ski. Hurtado has an extensive criminal history and the judge said because of that and his lies, he deserved jail time, not probation.

Hurtado, who was paid by car dealership owner Shaw Aryan to take the fall for him, will begin serving his prison sentence in one week. The teenage driver of the Jet Ski was sentenced to two years in a juvenile facility. Everyone else got probation.

Alyssa Jostad's parents have filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit which is still pending.
