DENVER — You can enjoy some of Colorado's beautiful outdoor scenery this weekend while trying out a new hobby.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is putting on their annual Free Fishing Weekend on June 1 and 2. That means you won't need a license to fish, although entry fees to state parks still apply.
CPW said the event is a great way to get outside and take advantage of Colorado's extensive opportunities to fish for a myriad of cold and warm water fish species.
Colorado has about 2,500 lakes and reservoirs and nearly 10,000 miles of fishable streams and rivers. Each year, CPW fills Colorado's waters with about 90 million fish.
For those new to the hobby, a free fishing clinic will be held at Eleven Mile State Park in Lake George from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Get Outdoors Day in Colorado Springs on Saturday is another great way to get introduced to the sport. The 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. event at Prospect Lake will teach the basics of fly fishing and spin fishing to families. The first 1,000 kids in line for the event will receive a free fishing pole.
Need other ideas of where to fish? CPW has compiled a map with more than 100 family-friendly fishing sites around the state. The agency also put together some fishing quick tips to get beginners started.
