KUSA — KUSA - Numerous homes were evacuated after a series of grass fires broke out off Interstate 70 near Watkins early Thursday morning.

Bennett-Watkins Fire says the blazes were contained just before 9 a.m. and crews were able to keep them from entering a nearby trailer park.

It's unclear what sparked the fires in the first place.

CDOT says U.S. 36 near Aurora is closed between Imboden Road and Manila Road with no estimated time of reopening. Drivers must use I-70.

This comes the day after lightning sparked an 8,000-acre blaze in rural Weld County.

Firefighters across the state won’t get much of a reprieve on Thursday, with temperatures expected to soar up to 98 degrees.
