KUSA – The Nature and Raptor Center of Pueblo as well as nine residents have been ordered to evacuate due to a wildfire that started burning Friday afternoon west of Pueblo.

What’s been dubbed the Stonemoor Fire started in southwest Pueblo as a grass fire at around 2 p.m.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office ordered nine residents who live off Highway 96 between McCarthy Boulevard and the reservoir in the area to evacuate.

Highway 96 is closed from mile marker 51 to 53 due to firefighting activity, the sheriff’s office tweeted.

The evacuation later extended to the Nature and Raptor Center at 5200 Nature Center Road.

The size of the fire is still being determined, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.

Pueblo Police Cpt. Joe Garcia tweeted that heavy smoke from the Stonemoor Fire is visible throughout the town.
